Utilizing the unique painting medium of encaustics, Christine Deemer and Beth Genson each create their distinct series of nature-inspired artworks. In the Waxing Philosophic exhibit, Christine Deemer (Perrysburg, Ohio) presents rolling seascapes and scenes of refreshing tides that invite the viewer to explore the importance of conserving marine ecosystems. Deemer states that her mixed media encaustic paintings, often incorporating techniques inspired by shou sugi ban, “draw upon the visual language of light on water, tidal movement, and marine textures to render surfaces that invite both physical and emotional reflection.” The exhibited paintings of Beth Genson (Portage, Ohio) feature glowing sunsets, agricultural landscapes and geological scenes, which examine the tension between pollution and the beauty of nature. Genson encourages visitors as they view the works from her Heavens, Earth and the Fragile Harvest series, to “consider what it means to cultivate, to nourish, and to sustain—not only the land but the culture and communities rooted in it.”
