Two Toledo-area artists exhibit in Chalk, Paper, Scissors: Works on Paper by Paul Brand and Anastasia Wagner. The exhibition features the abstract-inspired pastel and charcoal landscapes of Paul Brand and the intricately layered mixed media portrait collages of Anastasia Wagner, defining relationships between the viewer and the natural world
20 North Gallery and the artists will be welcoming friends and collectors at the free, public opening reception on Friday, July 15, from 6 – 9 p.m. The event will feature a free, light tapas buffet and cash bar by Venue.

Paul Brand (Toledo, Ohio)
Paul Brand holds a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Human Physiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (Rochester, New York). He has attended over 30 watercolor workshops since 1970, studying under nationally-known instructors such as Ed Whitney, Fred Graff, Frank Webb and Walter Chapman, in addition to workshops in acrylics and pastels with Vianna Szabo. In 1975, Brand joined the faculty of the now-former Medical College of Ohio, retiring as Associate Professor Emeritus of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at The University of Toledo (Ohio) in 2012. He currently teaches art classes across Northwest Ohio as a self-employed artist while serving as a part-time instructor in painting at the Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio).
Brand is a recipient of a 2015 Ohio Percent for Art Purchase Award. He has received over 35 awards for his fine artworks through shows at the Toledo Artists’ Club (Ohio), Parkwood Gallery (Toledo, Ohio) and other Northwest Ohio exhibits. A dedicated contributor to group exhibitions, Brand has had work accepted into numerous juried shows, festivals, and invitationals such as the Crosby Festival of the Arts at Toledo Botanical Garden (Ohio), Art on the Mall at The University of Toledo, and numerous exhibits in the Community Gallery of the Toledo Museum of Art. Recently, two of his watercolor paintings were accepted for exhibition in the TFAS100+5: Juried Regional Exhibition at the Center for the Visual Arts (Toledo, Ohio) in 2022. Brand’s artworks form part of the permanent collection of Tiffin University (Tiffin, Ohio) and Stark State College (North Canton, Ohio).

Anastasia Wagner (Sylvania, Ohio)
Anastasia Wagner received her B.F.A. summa cum laude with a concentration in painting and drawing from The University of Toledo (Ohio) in 2018. She began her professional involvement in the arts as an Apprentice for Young Artists At Work through The Arts Commission (Toledo, Ohio). She later returned to The Arts Commission for an arts administration internship in 2016 before serving as Gallery Associate at 20 North Gallery in Toledo, Ohio in 2017. Currently, Wagner is the Gallery Coordinator at 20 North Gallery.
Wagner is a frequent contributor to juried and group exhibitions including Artomatic 419 (Toledo, Ohio) in 2013 and 2015, Dream or Nightmare at the SCENE Metrospace (Lansing, Michigan) in 2016, Undisclosed at Toledo School for the Arts (Ohio) in 2018, 2019 and 2022, the Mini Maker Faire at Momentum (Promenade Park, Toledo, Ohio) in 2018 as well as numerous exhibitions at the Center for the Visual Arts, College of Engineering and Medical Center of The University of Toledo, for which she has won multiple scholarships and awards.
Wagner has also been involved in the arts community as a Guest Juror for the Toledo Artists’ Club and former Judge for the categories of Jewelry and Sculpture in the Crosby Festival of the Arts at Toledo Botanical Garden (Ohio). Additionally, she has fulfilled public art commissions, including a mural installed at the Main Branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (Ohio). She is a current Independent Member of the Toledo Federation of Art Societies, for which she serves as Exhibition Committee Co-Chair.
