20 North’s 2024-2025 Season Unveiled!

20 North Gallery announces 2024 – 2025 exhibition schedule

Through the remainder of the 2024 exhibition season and into 2025, 20 North Gallery will be featuring the work of Northwest Ohio and Midwest United States artists. Themes of nature, time, fabrication and conservation will be explored through exhibitions of paintings, ceramics, photography and more.

The season begins October 18, 2024

…with Robert Garcia: All Sides Now, a retrospective solo exhibition of Northwest Ohio artist Robert Garcia’s new and legacy artworks, in his signature style of magical realism. The exhibit will include oil paintings, watercolor paintings, paper mâché, ceramics and bronze sculpture.

20 North Gallery and the artist will be welcoming friends and collectors at the free Public Reception for Robert Garcia: All Sides Now on Friday, October 18, from 6 – 9 p.m.

The exhibit will continue through December 21, 2024.

Robert Garcia (Whitehouse, Ohio)
With early roots in Texas, Robert Garcia has a distinguished 50-year career in the arts in Toledo, Ohio. Garcia studied art at The University of Toledo (Ohio), where he earned a fellowship to The Yale Summer School of Music and Art (Norfolk, Connecticut). His work forms part of numerous permanent, public and private collections of institutions including The Arts Commission (Toledo, Ohio), The University of Toledo, Toledo Botanical Garden (Ohio) and the Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio). Garcia is a former instructor in the Toledo Public Schools system.

“The Ohioan,” painting by Matt Tisdale

20 North Gallery will present mixed media and paintings by Carrie Hawkins and Matt Tisdale. Whimsy, dreamscapes, surrealism and bête noir combine in this exhibit of 3-dimensional mixed media artworks by Hawkins and portrait & landscape paintings by Tisdale.
This exhibit will open to the public on January 24, 2025 and will continue through March 22, 2025.

A free and open-to-the-public Opening Reception will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, 6 – 9 p.m.

“Queen of the Dreamscapes,” mixed media by Carrie Hawkins

Carrie Hawkins (Temperance, Michigan)
Carrie Hawkins received her B.A. with a concentration in Painting & Digital Art and M.Ed. in Art Education from The University of Toledo (Ohio) in 2001 and 2006 respectively. Hawkins has exhibited her work in regional and international group and juried exhibitions, earning her numerous awards, such as in the Toledo Federation of Art Societies’ Juried Members Exclusive Exhibition (Second Award, 2023), The Bedford Arts For Our Future Show (Bedford Library, Temperance, Michigan) (First Place, 2005) and Visual Elements 65 (Woodstock Art Gallery, Woodstock, Ontario; Lourdes University, Sylvania, Ohio). Additionally, Hawkins is a frequent participant in arts festivals, recently including in 2024 the juried Crosby Festival of the Arts (Toledo Botanical Garden).

Matt Tisdale (Columbus, Ohio)
Born in Akron, Ohio, Matt Tisdale graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design (Ohio) in 2003. He has worked as a professional commercial illustrator and painter, having created graphic design and illustrative work for clients including Hollister. He has earned juried honors for his work, such as through the Crosby Festival of the Arts in Toledo Botanical Garden (Toledo, Ohio). Tisdale’s work has been published in magazines including VoyageOhio.

“Along the Ship Canal, East Chicago” watercolor by Tony Bianco

In Spring of 2025,

20 North Gallery will bring together the work of Midwest artists Tony Bianco and Sebastien Schohn. The show will feature haunting imagery of industrial landscapes in watercolor by Northwest Indiana artist Bianco and commercial construction photography by Toledo native Schohn.

This fascinating exhibit will open with a free Public Reception on April 4, 2025 and will continue through June 21, 2025.

Tony Bianco (Chesterton, Indiana)
Born and raised in Northwestern Indiana, Bianco is a primarily self-taught painter. Bianco has received numerous Purchase Awards through the annual Elkhart Juried Regional Exhibition, entering his work in the permanent, public collection of the Midwest Museum of American Art (Elkhart, Indiana). His paintings reflect his unique viewpoint as a factory worker of many years in the steel mills of Indiana. Recently, in 2024, Bianco enjoyed a solo exhibition, The Industrial Landscape: Paintings by Tony Bianco at the Midwest Museum of American Art.

“Bright” photography by Sebastien Schohn

Sebastien Schohn (Columbus, Ohio)
Sebastien Schohn’s photography is based around the American working class, nature, distorted reality and dwellings. He received a B.F.A. in Photography from The University of Toledo (Ohio) in 2018. In 2017, his photography was accepted into The University of Toledo’s Juried Student Exhibition at the Center for the Visual Arts (Toledo, Ohio) and received First Place. In 2018, he was selected to create and present an interactive artwork at Imagination Station in Toledo, as part of the Momentum arts festival. Schohn currently works for Trimedx, a biotechnology company based out of Indiana.

In the Summer of 2025,

20 North Gallery will present encaustic artworks by Christine Deemer and Beth Genson. The exhibit featuring landscapes and abstracts created in this pigmented hot wax painting medium will highlight the artists’ common theme of the importance of water conservation and preserving the natural world. Opening with a Public Reception on July 11, 2025, this exhibit will continue though September 20, 2025.

Christine Deemer (Perrysburg, Ohio)
Christine Deemer received her B.F.A. from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs; her M.B.A. from Regis University (Denver, Colorado) and her M.A. in Museum Studies from Western Illinois University (Macomb, Illinois). Deemer’s art studies were supplemented by painting classes in The Netherlands, where she has also exhibited her work. She is a frequent contributor to regional exhibitions and juried arts festivals, including the Crosby Festival of the Arts at Toledo Botanical Garden (Toledo, Ohio), Northwest Ohio Community Art Exhibition (NOWOH) at Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, Ohio) and the Toledo Federation of Art Societies’ Juried Members’ Exclusive Exhibition (Best of Show, 2021). Additionally, Deemer serves as chief Curator of the collection of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio.

Beth Genson (Portage, Ohio)
Beth Genson received a B.F.A. and B.Ed. from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in addition to studies at the University of Grenoble (France) and Encaustic Painting and Advanced Teaching Encaustics courses through R&F Paints (Kingston, New York). For several years, she taught art courses at the high school level throughout Ohio. She continues her role as an educator today through classes across Northwest Ohio such as at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens (Elmore, Ohio), the 577 Foundation (Perrysburg, Ohio) as well as through demonstrations and strategic planning sessions for groups and organizations including Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center (Lima, Ohio). Genson has participated in and received awards through numerous juried and group exhibitions across Ohio including the Northwest Ohio Community Art Exhibit (NOWOH) at Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, Ohio) (2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019), Art on the Mall at The University of Toledo (Ohio) (2011, 2012) and the Toledo Federation of Art Societies’  Juried Regional Exhibition (2020, 2022).

In addition to the featured exhibits, 20 North Gallery continues to display glass, ceramics, paintings and jewelry by noted artists of the region. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from noon to 4p.m.

Opening Receptions: 20 North Gallery and the artists will be welcoming friends and collectors at the free Public Receptions for featured exhibits. Each reception will feature a free appetizer buffet and cash bar by Venue.
